Perth in Western Australia’s capital and one of the most metropolitan cities in Australia, which is also a designated regional area. This means that people who wish to relocate to Perth can pursue the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 visa Australia. While this is a temporary visa that allows foreign skilled workers to reside in the regional area for up to five years, visa holders can apply for permanent residence after three years of living and working in that area.

There are many benefits of applying for this visa, which include faster visa processing and access to Regional Occupation Lists that feature more occupations than non-regional lists. So, people belonging to a very broad range of occupations can be eligible for this visa, provided they receive a nomination from Western Australia, or a sponsorship from an eligible relative living in Australia. Nominations are issued to people who can fulfill the local labor market requirements of the state.

To submit an Expression of Interest for this visa, candidates have to meet the visa criteria set by the federal immigration department, as well as the nomination criteria of Western Australia. The federal requirements for this visa (as well as the 190 and 189 visa) include scoring 65 points based on various selection factors — age, work experience, education, adaptability, single status or accompanying partner’s skills, and nomination or sponsorship. Being nominated or sponsored for this visa instantly adds 15 points to the score.

Besides this, candidates must have a valid skills assessment for their occupation, from the relevant authority in Australia; be under 45 years of age at the time of receiving an invitation to apply for the visa; and meet the health and character requirements. The candidate should also practice an occupation that is listed on the Western Australia Skilled Migration Occupation List. This is known as the nominated skilled occupation.

Aspirants also need a valid job offer from an employer in the state, for at least 12 months of full-time employment in the nominated skilled occupation, or a closely-related occupation. It is also necessary to meet the English language requirements for the nominated skilled occupation. Currently, only people who are already residing in Australia can apply for a nomination to migrate to Australia, due to the international border restrictions. In normal circumstances, overseas applicants would also be considered.
